Name of exercise:     Recognizing fishes

Equipment/ working environment Paper, pens, fishes, for example rainbow trout, pike perch, perch, vendace(whitefish)
Aims Recognize common Finnish fishes
Remarks Important that fishes are whole, then every part from the fish are recognizable

Description of the exercise:

Clients need to recognize common Finnish fishes.

Instructions for the adviser:

  1. Put fishes on a table, that clients can recognize them.
  2. Put on the table also the picture, on which certain parts of a fish are numbered.
  3. Give clients directions and equipments to do the task.
  4. During the assessment of work results, advisor can bring out for example following matters:

Identification marks of a rainbow trout:

  • rainbow trout has so soft scales, that you hardly recognize them scales
  • near to the tail is a small adipose fin, as all salmonoids have
  • the back dark gray
  • on the side runs a red – -green side line
  • the flesh is pink
  • rainbow trout is in Finland cultivated fish

Identification marks of a perch:

  • the scales of a perch are very rough
  • two back fins, from those in the first one very sharp thornes
  • ventral fins are red, that is sure identification mark of a perch
  • on the sides is serrate figure

Identification marks of a pike perch:

  • the scales are small and stick fast on the skin
  • two back fins, from those in the first one very sharp thornes
  • the skin color is totally light gray
  • the flesh is white

Identification marks of a vendace:

  • a vendace has soft hardly notiseable scales
  • rather small fish
  • hear to the tail is a small adipose fin
  • the skin color of a vendace is silver gray
  • very small vendaces are called niidle vandaces On the picture: rainbow trout, perch

Instructions for clients:

Regocnize the fishes and write the names on the paper in Finnish, German and English.

Equipment/ working environment Paper, pens, picture of a fish, a fresh fish for instance a perch, task card.
Aims To recognize some parts of a fish, learn anatomy of a fish
Remarks Important that a fish is whole, then every part from the fish is recognizable

Description of the exercise:

Clients have to recognize some parts of a fish and write the names on the picture of a fish. They can examine the parts from the fresh fish.

Instructions for the advisor:

  1. Put picture where is numbered fish part to the table. And fresh fish to help with recognizing.

A: 1. Dorsal fin 2. Pectoral fin 3. Tailfin 4. Operculum 4. Eye

  1. Give clients directions and equipments to do the task.

Instructions for clients:

  1. Name numbered fish parts from picture in Finnish, German and English. Fresh fish help with recognizing.
